Greatest Frontman In History    by Abel Mens

I will not try to answer that question because I am no one but a rock fan at best. Instead, I will just enumerate those that I think made a mark as a frontman. Before that, I listed my own criteria.

1. Voice For Rock N Roll – let’s admit it, most rock singers can belt out I Will Always Love You but they don’t have to. They only need to sing their own songs that will naturally resonate through rock history.

2. Presence – They have to command attention. When they enter the room or stadium of whatever the venue may be, everyone pays attention even the minute their shadow shows up. They have got to command the crowd’s scream, at will and their silence, at a single command.

3. Superiority Complex – they don’t have to say but they need to know it and it will show

4. Soul – it has to be there in the notes, in the words and in the silence. You know they feel their songs and it is enough to make you feel them too

5. The X Factor – I can’t explain it because it is impossible to explain that which you can’t define but you know it’s there.

And the list…

1. John Lennon (The Beatles) – the first and the greatest, the messiah of rock and roll. They wrote their owns songs and sang it in ways that remains to be revolutionary almost 40 years after. That is undebatable.

2. Paul McCartney (The Beatles) – perhaps the only one worthy to compete with Lennon. And together, their band is greater than all the bands put together.

3. Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones) – Mick Jagger is the father of rock n roll show. If they have over The Beatles, it is his ability to dominate the stage that not only sings rock n roll but shows rock n roll.

4. Ozzie Osbourne (Black Sabbath) – the real prince of dark rock. He was never scared to walk on the edge and didn’t mind falling. That was what rock was for him, fearless expression of everything insane.

5. Liam Gallagher (Oasis) – oh, he was so good all he had to do is stand and sing and the whole world sang with him. Who can forget that stance? Knees slightly bent, hands at the back or his sides or on special occasions on his pockets, body angled to one side, microphone angled down in closest contact between his nose and lips.

6. Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) – Those lips and weird face, those risky moves, the bandana on his mic stand and those screams that could wake an entire sleeping country. The minutes he goes on stage, he gives the audience a show never to be forgotten.

7. Roger Daltery (The Who) – You have to respect these guys for respecting their craft like no one else did. They are low profile but their music and longevity have proved to everyone they are in this because of their love for rock n roll.

8. Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) – you can hear, read, feel and see his soul in every performance. He felt every word and it so happen that what he was feeling was exactly what the audience was feeling.

9. Freddie Mercury (Queen) – He took rock n roll to lows and highs to intense for us to fathom. This cross dressing squeeking frontman taught us rock and roll was, is and will never be about gender, it’s about rock and roll.
